Please be careful before using MGM Financial Services, LLC tax services. I understand the company, and the owner, Michelle Mattison, have been in business over 20 years and there does not seem to have any past information about the company (good or bad), but my experience with them was horrible; I feel the fee I was charged was excessive and the tax strategies employed lacking. However, the reason I’m reaching out to warn everyone is because MGM/Ms. Mattison was contracted to prepare and electronically file my 2014 taxes – she forgot to do it. This mistake cost me over $5000.00 in penalties and interest for both the Federal and State tax returns. The only reason I found out about the mistake was because my wife and I tried to re-fi our house and during the processing the mortgage company told us we never filed our taxes in 2014. Now, I had documents provided by Ms. Mattison indicating otherwise, so I was a little shocked by this revelation. I reached out to Ms. Mattison who said she would look into the matter. Later, she contacted me and said she just filed the taxes (in February 2016) and requested an abatement for any penalties and interest. She insisted every taxpayer gets at least one abatement in their lifetime and it would not be a problem. She never explained why the taxes weren’t file on time. After several months of dealing with IRS and State officials (one of the reasons I contracted with a tax “professional” was so I would not have to deal with them) the abatement was denied and as I said earlier, over $5000.00 in penalties and interest were levied. Ms. Mattison agreed it was MGM’s mistake and that she should pay at least the $2557.00 “failure to file” penalty from the IRS, but pointed out her contract limited any damages to her fee, in this case $540.00. Several more months go by and I never receive anything – email, letter, payment, etc. I ended up suing MGM and Ms. Mattison in court. During the proceedings, she acknowledged she forgot to file the taxes. The judge ruled in my favor, but yet again, months later, I have yet to receive anything from MGM or Ms. Mattison – an apology, email, letter, or payment. Please know there are many other details that I am not laying out for you and I acknowledge I could be the one client that just had a bad experience, but given what happened, I don’t think so. It’s not just that MGM’s service was bad, it financially harmed me.
