I met with Debra Domino at H&R Block on W Lawrence Ave. in Chicago back on April 11, 2012 re: Federal and State tax preparation for 2011. Upon sitting down, I was immediately bombarded with a hard sell of services and Peace of Mind insurance. It took 15 minutes before Ms. Domino even asked me how she could help me today. No joke. It was quickly apparent that Ms. Domino did not know how to prepare basic 1040 returns as she repeatedly asked her colleagues for help, as well as having to Google certain information. One three separate occasions she asked me if I knew about certain tax laws!!As I am anal retentive in my record keeping, I had all W-2s, 1099s, and itemized deductions broken down by category and pasted onto individual sheets of paper, each category totaled at the top of the first page for ease of entry. At the end of the belabored process, Ms. Domino handed me a stylus and just told me to sign. She didn't offer to walk through my return and didn't answer any of my questions; she just wanted me to sign away. At the end of the process I was handed a bill for nearly $350.00. I asked her again about the Peace of Mind Insurance and clarified that it was a simple process to file a claim in the event of an audit. She never informed of the T&Cs and said it was really easy but that I shouldn't be audited. Despite my belief Ms. Domino was both unprofessional and lacked basic tax prep knowledge & skills, I paid and left. Once outside the office, I immediately called the 800# and filed a formal complaint. Fast forward to this year (2014) and sure enough the IRS is after me for an additional $900+ dollars because Ms. Domino forgot to add in one of my 1099s on the other income line. Once digging into the paperwork, I found Ms. Domino wrote that I had ZERO 1099s for tax year 2011 despite there being two stapled to the tax return package she gave to me! The "missing" 1099 was also in the package but not stapled with the others. According to H&R Block's own documentation, plus addiitional information available online, Ms. Domino was negligent and erroneously prepared my returns. Avoid her at all costs.
