My husband and I had our taxes done here last year. At first, our experience there was great. We were treated well, we felt our tax preparer had done a good job, and we were confident that we would be returning next year. However, about two weeks ago we received a letter from the state saying that I had not claimed income for a job I'd had previously, and now my husband and I owed the taxes that were not paid. I knew we had claimed all of our income, so I called Tax Shelter to see what the problem was. To make a long story short, a small mistake was made that really screwed us up. Our preparer was very nice about explaining the problem, calling the state, fixing the issue, and amending our taxes, however, we felt that it was only right that we be reimbursed for the fee we paid for our taxes to be done correctly. Cheryl, the owner of this business, strongly disagreed with our request and made that very clear before I'd even had a chance to get the entire sentence out of my mouth. As soon as we brought it up she got very defensive, got very hostile, raised her voice, and continuously denied us a refund. She called us immature and childish throughout our entire interaction, and she even told us at one point that she didn't want to refund us so that she could 'teach us a lesson.' I'm still unsure of what type of lesson she was trying to teach us, seeing as we're not the ones who'd made a mistake. She told us we didn't have enough life experience to understand why we didn't deserve a refund. She was denying our refund on the basis that 'they had still done the work,' even though the work that we trusted them to do was done incorrectly. I'm sure I am smart enough, have had enough jobs dealing in customer service, and have had enough life experience to know that a mistake made of that nature deserves a refund. In no way were we ever angry over the mistake that was made, we simply felt that we deserved some restitution for the trouble it caused us. Overall, we did not feel valued during this interaction. We felt belittled, and we did not feel as though we were taken seriously because we are so 'young,' (my husband is 30 and I'm 27). I was, and still am, extremely shocked that we were treated in this way. I feel that since Cheryl has treated us so poorly, she's surely treated customers this poorly in the past and will do so again in the future.
