I WON..!!! I received an audit letter from the IRS right before Christmas, 2015 requesting documentation for my Dog Breeding business in which I raise Miniature Schnauzers to sell as pets and also for show. After my meeting with the auditor-with-an-attitude, she concluded I did not have a business, I was a hobby breeder and all my dogs were pets. I was shocked at her findings as I have a business license in the State of Missouri, I pay sales tax quarterly on my puppy sales to individuals and I pay personal property tax on my cell phone, grooming table and equipment and filing cabinets….all of which are necessary to run my business. Since I am required to claim income/expenses on my federal and state income tax, I was astounded that she decided I was not a business. I did not want to retain a tax attorney in my state so I searched on the web for an attorney who had long-term experience in dealing with the IRS and Tom Ryder is the person I worked with on my audit. He is very knowledgeable and professional and I found him easy to talk to about the auditor I had and the predicament she was causing. There was no way I had to pay all those taxes and get a business license and not be considered a business. And if I didn’t fight it then I would be forever considered a hobby breeder. So I retained Tom Ryder as my attorney and he was a God-send for me. I could not have found a better person to help me. At this point, Tom Ryder dealt with the auditor at the IRS; on appeal with the auditor and her supervisor; and further appeals with the relevant IRS representatives. They were very adamant in their decision but Tom Ryder never gave up. Even though I got discouraged at times, after talking with him I knew I couldn’t give up and appealed all the way to tax court. I was amazed when I read the documentation he prepared for the IRS..!! He was so precise on the points the IRS said I was noncompliant on and appeal after appeal was filed all the way to tax court. When Tom Ryder asked them for case citations to disprove the case law he researched that applied to me, they couldn’t come up with anything. About two months before our trial date with the federal judge in tax court, Tom Ryder called me and I was still working on finding additional information he might need for my trial. He got kind of quiet for a minute, then he said “They conceded, you won!!!.” I was totally speechless and beside myself with happiness hearing him say that. I couldn’t thank him enough for all he had done. Words cannot describe the overwhelming feeling of happiness and relief that everything was over and I had WON..!! There is not a tax attorney in the U.S. that has the expertise that Tom Ryder has. I’m sure it is very rare for the IRS to be unable to come up with case law to prove their case, and time after time Tom Ryder did just that. He was calm and patient even when I was stressed; he was very good about communicating regularly and explaining everything; and he always had a positive and upbeat attitude, so you couldn’t help but relax and know everything was going to be okay, and he would take care of things. If you want THE BEST tax attorney to deal with the IRS for you, there is no one better than Tom Ryder.
